Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

In OpenOffice Writer, I cannot save a Word document with a password, though I am allowed to open the Word document that has an Office 97/2000 password. To save with a password Writer is requiring to save in a native format. This prevents passing the file back to Word users.

Since a doc file can be opened providing the password I think it should be allowed to save it as a doc with a password. This is using the Office97/2000 password compatibility for files used on both Windows and Ubuntu.

I am using OpenOffice 2.3.0 in Ubuntu Gutsy but I had the same problem using OpenOffice 2.2 with Ubuntu Feisty.

Could I request that this bug be addressed as soon as possible please. I have just abandoned Microsoft Office in favour of OpenOffice but this is a showstopper as I frequently share password-protected documents with Word users. Thank you.

It has been filed in the OpenOffice.org bug tracker, so whenever the developers get to it will be fixed. Currently it looks like they consider it to be low priority as they have set it to "OOo later".

For a work-around, send the .doc file to a compressed (zipped) folder (right click, send to, compressed (zipped) folder); then password protect the zipped folder (right click, explore, file, add a password.)

I cannot say emphatically enough how upsetting it is to have to intermittently exit openoffice, and revert to "Word," in order that I can create a word-97 encrypted doc file that I am required to create!!! I gather a decision was made to allow decryption, but not encryption of word-97 files, because the encryption algorithm is weak. That misses the point that people who are compelled to use this silly format are therefore forced to revert to Word. The "save with password box" is still greyed out under FC11 pre-release / OO 3.1.0!!!

Suggestions of using alternative encryption techniques completely miss the point. If I could dictate the format and encryption type, in the first place, I wouldn't be using dot doc at all!

Somebody please raise the priority on this.

I'm with everyone else on this issue, please fix it ASAP. Its a big turn off for me and is the one feature that is keeping me from using OO as my main word processor.

Till the bug is fixed, you could rather use "gpg -c filename" or zip protect your doc, or export as pdf and then protect it.

No alternative approach is good enough if you need to exchange password-protected Word documents with colleagues. This bug *must* be solved in order to keep OpenOffice growing. In my situation, only workaround is wine/Word.

Looks fixed with OpenOffice.org 3.2.1 on Mint 10 (and presumably Ubuntu Maverick). I can save password-protected .doc and .xls files and open them.
