Bug Description

I had an offlist discussion with JJ re: the Open Library logo.

I thought it might be good to give little history behind the logo - it has been a part of the OL UI since the project's inception. The ornate border around is literally a scan off of the cover of a public domain book that I modified and converted to vector art. Whenever a user provides a translation to the term "Open Library", we create a new version of the logo for i18n.

http://openlibrary.org/i18n/strings.en?m=edit
http://openlibrary.org/i18n/strings.es?m=edit
http://openlibrary.org/i18n/strings.te?m=edit <-- (that's Telugu - Anand's native language)

We could possible automatically generate a graphic based on the i18n string using an imaging library - but I would imagine the results would not be too good. We handcraft each logo, and often select the best font for the language. We follow ISO-639-2.

We have pages for a dozen more languages, but no translation for the phrase "Open Library" - I will create a logo for these when translations are available (da, el, fr, hu, ja, pt, ro, ru, sh, sl, vi, mn). I also have unicode problems with 2 entries (bn, my) and 4 other pages do not render at all (id, it, sv, zu) - I will file this under a separate bug.

It is good to see so many translations in progress.
(oops - that link to ISO-639-2 is http://openlibrary.org/i18n )

Need to work through i18n in depth in 2010. Translation of the logo may be part of this.
