can't save alsamixer settings

Bug Description
sudo alsactl store won't work unless I add hero to the root group. It says '/home/hero is not ours' unless I run 'usermod -G root hero'

SOLUTION: The problem I was actually having (no sound in browsers despite selecting my external soundcard) was fixed by using PulseAudio instead.
ALSO, the usermod command breaks my ability to use sudo.
