Cannot type in start menu text boxes

When I open the "start menu" from the panel in Linux Mint 17.3 Xfce, I cannot type into the search box. First, I click the onboard icon in the dock, then I click on the little mint icon. The input text box for the search is automatically selected and has a blinking cursor, but any text I type does not go into the search box.

Another example is when I start an application that needs to authenticate me, such as Software Manager, the typing does not go into the password input text box.

Still can reproduce menu probem . Mint 19.3 Cinnamon .software manager works ok.
