FYI, the low-latency experiment caused Bug #1068899 and I had to revert it.
On to plan C, then. Trunk now simply finishes drawing before a key-press is sent. This ought to actually be more effective in preventing key repeats than the previous try.

@mrDoctorWho, if you get the chance, please try trunk again and let me know if you get unwanted key repeats. I have a feeling it will be a lot harder to get them this time.
