Thanks for the data. The sequence shows 1 down, 1 up, 2 down, 2 up, 3 down. Nothing out of the ordinary.

The problem seems to be unity here. Disable the handles (run ccsm, disable "unity MY grab handles"), restart, and it seems to work better. I have seen the freeze also without the handles, but only at the first X restart after disabling the handles.

I am also getting this same problem with my Apple Magic Trackpad on my Lenovo T540 running Ubuntu 14.04. I am using only the bluetooth built-in to the laptop, no external dongle.

My trackpad worked fine on older T510 running Ubuntu 12.04.

If the problem lies with the hardware can anyone recommend a make/manufacturer/model for a Bluetooth dongle that works?

We've had this same issue on Chrome OS for a while. Today I dug into it and posted my findings here. https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=214588#c22

Of particular interest to this crowd is that using we see the mouse trying to retransmit the packet with 3 fingers.

I also found the issue to be based on the BT adapter's manufacturer: Broadcom/Atheros work, but Intel didn't. I didn't have a Cambridge Silicon adapter handy to test.

What works (in my experience): Any bluetooth dongle that's not a "Cambridge Silicon Radio" :)

Unfortunately you can't really know if you have one without plugging it in and listing USB device information.
