Turning on as-external gives error for every use of emacsclient

Bug Description
Since turning on as-external to use with Firefox, I get this error for every use of emacsclient:
Symbol's value as variable is void: pause-buffer
I presume this is because pause.el is not loaded when it should be.
I can work around it by switching as-external mode off, but the number of features of nXhtml that I can leave switched on by default is diminishing!
