Bug Description

System is an old AMD Athlon XP 1900+ on a ASUS A7V600-X MoBo with NVIDIA GeForce3 Ti200

elementaryos-0.3.2-stable-i386.20151209 is installed and up.

cat /proc/version_signature
Ubuntu 3.19.0-59.66~14.04.1-generic 3.19.8-ckt19

lspci -vnn | grep -i VGA -A 12

Starting with "nouveau-driver" give bad luck with black screen. From nvidia-home i got:

NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.19-pkg1.run &
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.23-pkg1.run

Both packages won't install. In both cases the same failure message appear:

Using: nvidia-installer ncurses user interface -> License accepted. -> Installing NVIDIA driver version 96.43.23. -> Running distribution scripts executing: '/usr/lib/nvidia/pre-install'... -> done. -> The distribution-provided pre-install script failed! Continue installation anyway? (Answer: Yes) -> Performing CC sanity check with CC="cc". -> Performing CC version check with CC="cc".

ERROR: The kernel header file '/lib/modules/3.19.0-59-generic/build/include/linux/version.h' does not exist.

The most likely reason for this is that the kernel source files in '/lib/modules/3.19.0-59-generic/build' have not been configured. ERROR: Installation has failed. Please see the file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for details. You may find suggestions on fixing installation problems in the README available on the Linux driver download page at www.nvidia.com.

A sudo apt-get install linux-generic did not fix the problem.
Graphics work with no/unknown driver without any chance of setting resolution or other things.
Monitor will not identified.
Process "gala" is running high about 60% and mostly more.

Problem is, that old nvidia drivers doesn't seems to be compatible with 3.19 kernel (there are some changes).

If you have black screen issue with it, try report it upstream and they maybe get get fixed. On #nouveau channel they could help you, if you can get dmesg.

To get screen output running, append in /boot/grub/grub.cfg to your actual kernel line nouveau.modeset=0 .

Also try experiment with later kernels, try 4.5.x, 4.6.x, 4.7.x and also you could try latest development 4.8_rc1

There is not much elementary OS can do in this case.

Consider giving Loki a shot, maybe Nvidia drivers work better on the newer kernel version shipped with it.

Changed in elementaryos:
status: New → Invalid
