Bug Description

Upstream report: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=174049

petar@aurora:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 11.10
Release: 11.10

nvidia-current:
  Installed: 295.20-0ubuntu1~oneiric~xup1
  Candidate: 295.20-0ubuntu1~oneiric~xup1
  Version table:
 *** 295.20-0ubuntu1~oneiric~xup1 0
        500 http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates/ubuntu/ oneiric/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     280.13-0ubuntu6 0
        500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric/restricted i386 Packages

After updating NVidia driver from version 290.10 to version 295.20 (from x-updates), Gnome Shell became crushy. All you have to do to crash Gnome Shell is to go to overlay mode (by pressing window key on your keyboard or moving your mouse to the top left screen corner) and start typing someting (should search/filter the installed applications). I also have the Journal gnome-shell plugin installed (you get Windows, Applications, Journal tabs in the overlay mode if you have it isntalled) and whenever i try to switch to the Journal view, Gnome Shell crashes.

Can Brandon Snider downgrade the packages in X Updates PPA to 290.10 untill this problem is fixed?

I too had a very unstable lucid 10.04.4LTS system since the upgrade of the Nvidia drivers to 295.20 from the X-Update PPA.

My issues included:

1. Occasional system hangs, with frozen screen with the mouse movement still responding.

2. GL Screensaver activating = occasional hang

3. Compiz desktop effects + maximizing a window = occasional screen freeze!

4. Full screen video playback (especially with HD content .mkv files) = occasional screen freeze!

5. Clean shutdown stopped. System would shutdown, with blank screen and system fan running. Hard power off (holding power button down) was the only way to turn the laptop off.

I then downgraded my Nvidia drivers to 280.13 (luckily was still in the repos) and "locked" the packages.

Now my system is back to it's usual stable self. No more random screen freezes and more importantly, system now shuts down cleanly (no more holding the power button until full power off).

My system is:

Dell XPS M1530
Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS (2.6.32-39-generic)

Let me know if you require any additional information.

Sorry, I forgot to mention the video card:

GeForce 8600M GT

BTW I also experienced the 4-pixel sized random black dots occasional screen corruption with the 295.20 driver as reported by a few people now.

295.33-0ubuntu1~oneiric~xup1 has just been release which seems to have fixed the gnome3 crashing problems.

Confirmed. Gnome-Shell issue is resolved in the 295.33 driver. I'm curious if the issues reported by Jeff Gosden are also fixed.

The problems I had with the 295.20 and Gnome SHell were resolved with the 295.33 update. The NVIDIA Linux forum presently contains only two bug reports, one about an error in the driver installation script, which probably doesn't concern us because we install the drivers using a package manager, and the other one is about X crashes on a Clevo M571RU-U notebook (with Ubuntu 11.10). Someone should probably do an extensive testing of 295.33 with Compiz.

That version is no more supported; please open a new bug report if the actual archive found version also has the same issue.
