Bug Description

I will attach the file.

It crashed when I selected a text field in KDM.
or, launched a kde program (kde loaded if I logged in as the user I was in as.

GDM did not crash..

twm, and fvwm both would not load at all.

xfce loaded ok.

I used the nvidia-control panel to set up twinview. (I have two monitors)

I used disper to turn off my screen repeatedly so I could play starcraft., and had to enable it in the nvidia-control panel.

of note, I was installing some language packs, scim, and ibus for chinese.
I have fancy usb keyboard that has a hub in it... and off that I have an old saitek gm2 gamer control and mouse.

My X crashed, even at the display manager level, so this is pretty whacked.

I had origionally thought it was a problem with my backports kde 4.8.

I am running kubuntu 11.10 started from an xubuntu install.

I have an nvidia gt240 on a sempron140

moving the xorg.conf and letting x create a new one/detect it's own settings let it work.

unity (blech) had a few artificats when it came up, so I thought I might have corrupted video memory (I did a full system memory test, and it passed) But there is apperantly no way to test my videocard memory, and it works rock solid all the rest of the time.

correction, I crashed when the nvidia option was selected... I currently have that commented out... There was no mention of nv or nouveu in the one that crashed.

This happened again after I had uninstalled disper... so it might be more nvidia-x-server settings related... or bad video memory... we sure could use some diagnostic tools.

had thought it was disper.. but it happened again when I used nvidia x settings. It has not happened since tho... So I may be closing it soon (there was an X.org update right after I posted this bug that could be related)

affects: disper → nvidia-drivers-ubuntu
