Bug Description

This was working fine on Lucid but I just upgraded to Maverick and now I'm having the following problem, using the nVidia driver "version current" (not sure which version that is; the one that came with Maverick), on an nVidia GeForce 8600M GT.

My display works fine, but when I switch to my external monitor (Acer 24" at 1920x1080) and set the resolution correctly, it continues displaying correctly for some time, but eventually (not sure what triggers it), everything goes black, except for the mouse cursor. I can move the mouse around and see it change shape as it hovers over different contexts, but everything else is totally black. I am using advanced desktop effects. It is temporarily fixed by restarting GDM.

This only happens with the proprietary drivers. I disabled them and rebooted, and it's not a problem.

I believe the monitor is an Acer H243 HBMID 24" monitor, at 1920x1080, if that helps.

No UI at all with a Samsung Q330 (GeForce G 310M graphics chipset).

Interestingly: I am still getting this issue when I switch to the external monitor (disabling my laptop's built-in screen). But I've found that if I use TwinView to show either the same image or a split screen image on both screens, it doesn't come up.

So as a workaround, I can just leave my laptop's screen turned on when I'm using the external monitor. (Waste of power though.)
