Bug Description

When I start qbittorrent with my desktop clean and no apps or windows running, program displays window menu (file...).
However, when I have qbittorrent up and running and start other app or window (like firefox), qbittorrent window menu mysteriously disappears. Even when I exit other programs or windows and my desktop is clean again, I click on qbittorrent icon in notification area and it still doesn't show up (window menu). Then, I have to exit qbittorrent and start it over again with clean desktop to see qbittorrent window menu. Strange.

I'm sending some screenshots so you can understand a little better what I'm talking about. Notice the mouse on top left corner of the screen.

This is not a bug in qBittorrent, forwarding to the unity developers instead.

Can't reproduce this here, when you say the "qbittorrent" mysteriously dissapears, do you mean it "minimizes" to the launcher bar, or that the whole GUI dissapears without trace? Marking as incomplete for now, please provide some more information.

affects: qbittorrent → null

No, I don't mean that GUI disappears. Just the Top Window Menu. As you can see in screenshots. Notice the mouse on top left corner of the screen. It displays it nicely when I start qbittorrent with no other windows running. For example: qbittorrent is running in the background. I have a white-list for all apps that run in systray. I click on qbittorrent icon in systray and point with mouse over window menu. You know, upper panel wit exit, maximize and minimize buttons. At this point window menu shows.
But when I have qbittorrent running in background and open other windows or app (like firefox or simply nautilus), and then click on qbittorrent icon in systray, upper panel window menu (with selections like file, tools...) is gone. When I point with mouse over it, qbittorrent version number disappears and panel ( where it should show window menu with: file, tools...) is blank.

It seems this is the problem for all Qt apps. Do a white-list for systray icons and try to run some Qt app couple of times in combination with firefox for example and you will reproduce it successfully.

I believe when qbittorrent is minimized to tray, indicator-appmenu loses track of qbittorrent window and hence causing the bug, could be a bug in another component but indicator-appmenu IMO is more closer than unity.

affects: unity → indicator-appmenu

is that still an issue in Oneiric? is that happening when using the systray only?

Yes, this is still an issue in Oneiric...

Workaround would be to disable global app menu, but proper fix would be much better.

Mr. Morfoos, how do you reproduce the bug? I use qbittorrent daily but have not seen the bug in Ubuntu 11.10 though i do remember it happening in Ubuntu 11.04

Still exists in 12.04. I open qbittorent to download something or to continue downloading. If I select to hide qbittorrent in the tray icon it disappears. I can click hide/show many times and the window will not appear. I have to close qbittorrent and open it again to see the window but minimizing it to the system tray will eventually make disappear forever. You can only see the blue round "qb" icon on the unity panel.

As mentioned by Omer above:

"I believe when qbittorrent is minimized to tray, indicator-appmenu loses track of qbittorrent window and hence causing the bug, could be a bug in another component but indicator-appmenu IMO is more closer than unity."

This is exactly the problem here. Tested on a Intel DZ68DB Desktop on 64Bit, on a HP DV6000 32Bit and on a Toshiba Satellite 32Bit.

In the HP, Toshiba and the Intel Desktop which all use 12.04 all had the problem.

Is not annoying until the app is minimized.

Charles Kerr (charlesk) wrote :

The Window not appearing is a separate issue from the menu not appearing...

I can confirm Luis' report in comment #11 that if you hide qBitTorrent to the notification area, then clicking on its launcher button basically does nothing and that sooner or later you can hide it altogether s.t. the window never reappears...

However that seems like a separate issue from the rest of this ticket and seems like more of a Unity issue than an appmenu-gtk one, and probably deserves its own ticket.

However, I'm not able to reproduce the window-appears-but-menus-are-gone error that Omer and Morfoos wrote about last June. Is that behavior still happening for anyone?
