Long-term use: do you prefer a mix of Launchpad & Launchkey or just one device?

Alrighty, so I’m deep into integrating my setup with Ableton. Happy with the DAW, happy with the Launchkey Mini and now thinking about what the next step might be. My desk is relatively small so that might dictate what I do a bit. Based on measurements alone I’ve narrowed it down to either the LK 49 vs a combo of the LK 25/37 & LPX for a mix of pads & keys. This is a shared desk, so the devices will be off the desk by default and then brought out to use when I’m doing music.

As an aside, the type of music I do is a mix of samples and synths. I’m not a finger drummer, but I do use pads to play sample chops rhythmically and whatnot.

With these controllers, I’m noticing there are quite a few functionality crossovers like pan, send & volume controllers etc. And so price aside, it comes down to the creative possibilities of having multiple devices vs the simplicity of plugging in a single box.

That got me thinking about how practical it is to use 2 main controllers in the studio, and I thought I’d lean on the wisdom of others who have done it to hear both the good and the bad.

So what I’d like to know is; Creatively do you like having 2 interfaces for music creation on the table (eg:pads & key controller) or do you find the focus of a single device is better or easier? I’d be interested to hear from you if you’ve had both (and gone back to a single unit) or if you’ve kept both and prefer to have them both around.
