What could be causing this?

Are your database migrations up to date ?

The image_ref column was added in migration 21.

try doing a 'nova-manage db sync' to upgrade the db schema and see if the problem goes away ... if you get any output from the command, the database was out of date.

Ken, you're correct: the controller node packages needed to be updated, and then running "nova-manage db sync" got rid of this traceback. But I still see the following error in nova-api.log when I run "euca-describe-images":

My guess is that you need to update glance as well.

I updated all available packages at the time. There was another set today, including python-glance, which I updated, but it didn't help. It may be related to another bug (#803188) that was fixed recently, but if so the fix hasn't made it yet into my ppa.

Just to clarify: I only have "python-glance" package installed, not the "glance" server.

The problem was that I installed Nova from trunk but used instructions for Cactus, which does not use Glance at all. I installed at the time when trunk still allowed running Nova without glance and using only the local storage, but when I updated to a version after Glance become mandatory, everything broke down.

I will close this bug, since it was a problem with the installation instructions (for which I have entered a bug that has since been fixed), not Nova itself.
