Cannot set ulimit in /etc/default/nginx

Setting ulimit parameters in /etc/default/nginx throws error on nginx start:
Starting nginx: [: 91: -n: unexpected operator

Here is the content of /etc/default/nginx

# Set the ulimit variable if you need defaults to change.
# Example: ULIMIT="-n 4096"
ULIMIT="-n 4096"

This happens only on service nginx start (restart works)

Thanks for pointing out the specific case that this occurs. Simple and easy fix. I will have this pushed to Nginx in Debian very soon. There are two other outstanding Nginx bugs that need to be addressed before the new package is uploaded and then I will file a sync request for Ubuntu. There are many changes that need to be sync'ed and I hope I can get them in time. :)

This fix will be part of nginx_0.8.54-3 and has been committed to the debian repository. When this version is released, I will request a sync of this package.
