Bug Description
We must support DIY installation of a Desktop (EG: Gnome, KDE, Xfce, etc.).
I downloaded Nexenta 2.0 RC1 from:
http://
I understand that Nexenta does not offer a Desktop, only the 'core' OS. We must
install our own. The Package Repository contains Gnome, KDE, Xfce, I know this
because I tried them all!
First I tried Gnome since it seemed to have more Packages ported. The problem is that
the Toolbar keeps opening and closing. Googling show many others report this error.
Next I tried KDE but it seemed as though there were not enough Packages to get
it to work or the 'autoconfiguration' was not successful. I had to reinstall
Gnome (and not gdm) to fix the broken Dependancies for KDE (!). Next.
Finally I tried 'apt-get install xfce4' and reinstalled gdm, that worked reasonably
well with the _only_ complaint that upon Startup the Trash is not found by the
File Manager - Google for that too: http://
I needed to leave both Gnome and KDE Packages installed since xfce uses some
of the dependancies, sounds, themes, backgrounds, etc... That wastes lots of space!
I am running this on VMware so either I have a Desktop or I struggle with a
screen the size of Grub's Splashscreen, tiny. Now that I have xfce4.4 running
I can relax and try to investigate these issues.
Another 3D Desktop that would be really great to see is Project Looking Glass:

The "BUG" in Nexenta is that the 'core-Platform' (without a Desktop) _must_
allow the addition of the Desktops in the Nexenta Package Repository to be
installed quite simply (I followed the FAQ, and Googled a lot).
I am a little familiar with OpenSolaris, and more familiar with Linux and WindowsXP
so for people less Computer Savvy it will be tough to get a Desktop going. I have
been over at OpenSolaris helping get the Kernel (and other programs) running. I
can assure you that you will benefit from a Kernel upgrade, much has been fixed.
Thanks Nexenta Team (and the Community) for keeping the Nexenta Project going,
Rob
