Need a bit of clarification --
Are you seeing this in the TTF or OTF packages available for download here? If so, then it is an issue with the font. If not, then it is an issue for the GWF service, but not for the font.

Thanks.

Have not downloaded fonts here. It must be GWF service issue then. Guess just coincidence that it "broke" as you've been working on BF. (Depending on browser, can be bf/light mash-up, or bf/light/serif/sans serif mash-up.) It's been reported over there, but I have no idea how long it takes for this type of issue resolved.

Disappointing, as it is really the only font I've found that looks right in WP template I'm using. Many thanks.

My guess is that the GWF breakage is either caused by them rolling-out the bold in addition to the regular, or by them rolling out the bold and also rolling out the updated (Greek/Cyrillic) regular simultaneously. (I don't really know how that process works on their end, but since the serif font getting mixed in is definitely from somewhere else, it feels like a server-side hiccup) In either case, they couldn't have rolled it out before it was released here, so in that sense the timing is logical.

But I suspect that either the server(s) will stabilize, or, if there's a configuration problem, that the Googleers will get it sorted out shortly. Since the majority of people seem to be using it through GWF, though, if there is a fundamental bug in either of the font packages, I'm confident they'll spot that and get in touch with me.

Which reminds me that I need to learn how to build Debian packages....

Anyway, thanks for the heads-up; if I get any more info you can find an update here.

Thanks so much Nathan. Hope this didn't seem too remedial. News Cycle is one of the best-drawn fonts on GWF. (I'm no longer a designer, and certainly not a web designer, but I studied with Matthew Carter and Armin Hofmann many years back, so can appreciate a well-drawn font.) Hope Google fixes the issue soon.

Nathan: Any thoughts on how to get Google to take a look at the issue? Reported on the googlefonts directory, but seeing no action. Just tried using the font again a few minutes ago, but getting the same broken result. At this point trying to understand if it is gwf issue (as it worked just fine for several days, and by others accounts, for weeks) or if it is a WP coding issue. (Although not sure why it would just "break" without other changes, e.g., adding WP plug-in.) Eager to use the font; having to make do with a substitute for the moment. Many thanks.
