Bug Description

I hope I am in the right place for this. My .xsession-errors file is filled with entries in the following format, in that order/sequence, over and over and continuously:

(nm-applet:1839): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_destroy: assertion 'GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed

(nm-applet:1839): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_destroy: assertion 'GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed

(nm-applet:1839): Gtk-WARNING **: Can't set a parent on widget which has a parent

Ubuntu MATE 17.10

I can understand how this may seem like nothing of concern to the devs / maintainers, but when you end up with log files of 15-20MB, and nearly all of it is due to this, it is problemsome. There is no need to see this a handful of times each minute as it just interferes with the actual intention of the xsession-errors file.

I can confirm the issue is still there on 18.04 as I am currently running 18.04.1 LTS (Bionic Beaver) 64-bit. I do not use 18.10, so I comment on that.

Confirm

The first thing I did is to install unity-desktop (not sure the problem existed earlier)

Hi, is there any updates for this? I see this issue in xubuntu 20.04 (and previously 19.10). It clogs up the .xsessions-errors file periodically until I run out of disk space. A temporary fix is to write a cron job to empty this file if it exceeds some threshold

I am encountering the same issue in 20.04. The message is repeating approximately every three seconds, resulting in log files of hundreds of gigabytes. It also makes the system log nearly useless for any other use; it is near-impossible to even open the file, and causes logrotate to hang up for hours every time it attempts to run since it attempts compression.

My apologies for the fudged linebreak in the previous comment.

I am happy to report that recompiling the bionic packages while disabling Support-hiding-rather-than-desensitizing-disallowed-items.patch from debian/patches/series fixes this issue for me (after logging out of X and logging back in).
