I can confirm this bug! I'm using the "Classic Desktop". I tried to install the newer version from getdeb.net but that didn't help and I also tried to remove the ~/.purple directory.
Is there a workaround for this?
My laptop is an Asus Eee 1000H

Apparently the default in the netbook remix is to not show the tray icon. The setting for this is in Pidgin's Preferences dialog; it is the first control on the first tab.

This was an embarrasingg "bug" :) I wonder why anyone wouldn't like to show that tray icon but let's not discuss that here.
I guess this report can be closed after it is fixed in the desktop switching tool.
