Bug Description

Install testing for the RC, the live session fails to start Xorg. The log is attached.

Image used: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-netbook-remix/daily-live/20090415/jaunty-netbook-remix-i386.img

This is an Intel Classmate, with the celeron. The beta image worked fine.

Error message in gdm.log:
error setting MTRR (base = 0xd0000000, size = 0x10000000, type = 1) Invalid argument (22)

Hi Ken,

Does this generate a backtrace in /var/log/gdm/:0.log?

Nope, I am attaching that log as well.

Please note it isn't just the live session that fails, the installer doesn't load either. I assume the installer starts a minimal X.

ok, looks like there's enough here to consider this a bug in the -intel driver (or thereabouts); opening a task against the package.

I finally got a live usb to boot (worked around bug 358881) of desktop-i386, Xorg works fine on the same classmate.

Odd, your log looks like a successful startup. What do you see on the screen?

Please run "apport-collect 361941" on the affected system to attach debug information, and in the future, use ubuntu-bug(1) to file the bug to avoid this extra step.

Will do..

On the screen at boot I get the blue screen that says X failed to start in 90s. If I drop to a shell and run startx I get the exact same output that is in the gdm log attached above and nothing more.

Hi Ken,

If you install the beta version of -intel (2:2.6.3-0ubuntu2 or so) does X start correctly?

If it does work, then it would be helpful if you could boot each of the versions between 0u2 and 0u9 to see which introduced the regression.

If it doesn't work, then it may not be -intel that has caused the regression.

@Ken, are you saying that desktop-i386 works, but netbook-remix-i386 (similar version) does not?

Have you run a media integrity check on both?

I formated this usb stick since the past several install tests for UNR chasing another bug, I re-imaged it and tried again and now all works. So I guess it was corrupt... but not so corrupt it didnt' work at all.
