Bug Description

I installed Ubuntu-Netbook-remix metapackage from Jaunty repository to give it a try.
Later on I removed it again. But after a reboot I got a background (jut seeing the wallpaper) and nothing else.
alt+f2 did not work. So I noticed that gnome-panel was not started.
I managed to start a terminal and gnome-panel by creating a new starter on the desktop (right click did work).
Starting gnome-panel did give me the panels and menu's, but the window manager (metacity isn't it?) was not started (no window drawing). I figured out that if I switched on and of desktop effects via appearance, I got my windows back.
Reinstalling metacity or gnome-panel had no effect. And I tried several reboot's.
This only concerned one/the main user. not root.

Finally I deleted (actually moved) .gnome2, .gconf and .config. After a reboot, everything was working again, but I had to reset everything! Even evolution. Damn!
I did a search on this on the internet and found several same case like this one.
In my opinion this is really critical! What if this would happen to someone really new to linux!

Did you use desktop-switcher by any chance?

If so, you'd need to run this command in a terminal to restore your desktop:

gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/session/required_components_list --type list --list-type=string ["windowmanager","panel","filemanager"]

Changed in netbook-remix-launcher:
status: New → Triaged

Yes I did use the desktop-switcher. I resolved the issue the hard way. But I'm sure this gconftool-2 command will help others. Thanks anyway. No bad feelings ;) I know Jaunty is/was still Beta.

Hi all,
can you please suggest anything to my problem:
I installed the final version of Ubuntu Netbook Remix (9.04) through Live USB stick on my EeePC 1000H. As the new 'netbook style" was strange for me (for the moment) I changed the desktop to the classic one (from the top panel menu). I then connected to the Internet and all updates done.

All fine till a reboot!

I have the same problem as above and now running the Live USB again to find a solution!
(Please note that this is a SINGLE boot netbook with the UNR only)

Regards,
George
