Bug Description

After having installed the UNR packages from the official repositories, I find that clicking on the "Home", "Network" and other mounted disks on the right side of the netbook-launcher interface does not work at all. A pop up shows saying "Opening Home", for instance, and after a few seconds it disappears, and that's it.

The funny thing is that if I set up new bookmarks in Nautilus, such as Desktop or Documents, they appear in the launcher as expected, and when I click on them, Nautilus is opened to browse these bookmarks as expected, too.

I tried running netbook-launcher from a terminal to see if there was any error message displayed when trying to open the Home directory, but none were reported.

The only explanation I can I think of is that I also had Thunar installed and maybe it's trying to use it to open these directories. So maybe if there's a way to configure which file browser to use... But that wouldn't explain why nautilus' bookmarks work.

It seems this bug is, for the most parts, related to bug 278284 No error message trying to access unreachable bookmark. A temporary solution is to hide those "dead" bookmarks through some settings in gconf-editor and/or by tweaking some configuration files for UNR desktop.

I wouldn't say that it is related "for the most parts". It is inconvenient not having any error reported, but it is a lot more inconvenient not being able to open default bookmarks such as home and mounted units. The main problem is that I can't open bookmarks that are actually reachable. And the baffling part is that, if I define those same bookmarks myself, they work.

So, it's true that I can define bookmarks for home and network (not for mounted units, since I don't know the mount point beforehand), but as far as I know, I can't remove the original bookmarks, not even in gconf-editor. I'll try with netbook-launcher's configuration files next.

Thank you for your fast answer.

Can you run the launcher from a terminal and see if there is any output when launching those bookmarks?

Certainly I can. Before you examine the terminal output, let me explain what happened.

The first few lines, up to the Volume Added line, are displayed once the launcher starts. After that I tried a couple of times to open the home bookmark and the mounted volume, without success or any message.

Then I opened a bookmark I defined myself, got the nautilus warning on the next line and the bookmark opened all right. One last thing I tried was unmounting the media that was previously detected. After clicking on the eject icon on the launcher, the unit was marked as not mounted. To double check I opened a bookmark defined by me that points to a directory in that unit. That was when I got the last line, a warning because the directory did not exist, as expected.

So, I can even mount and unmount media, but cannot open it directly from the launcher, and there's no output on the terminal when that happens.

One other thing, I tried UNR with Ubuntu 8.04.1 and it worked flawlessly. After installing Ubuntu 8.10 from scratch, that's when I found this problem. It may as well be a problem of my setup, but I can't think why since I installed directly from the repositories.

Sorry for the long comment, I hope that giving as many details as possible can help locating the origin of this bug.

Hi, thanks for the feedback. The loading of bookmarks was changed a few weeks ago and I've updated the intrepid packages in our PPA, could you please see if this problem still occurs?

Hi, sorry for delaying my answer so much. To answer Neil's last question, using version 1.6.16 the problem was still the same. However, I have now updated to Jaunty (with a clean install) and the issue has disappeared. I guess the problem had something to do with my earlier setup (which was an installation from Intrepid mini iso), theoretically, my installation process shouldn't have mattered at all, but apparently it did matter.

I'd say that this bug can be closed, as far as I'm concerned, but since it seems that the bug has been confirmed (I don't know if that means that the problem has been reproduced on another system), then it's up to you. The only thing is that I won't be able to help you now that I don't have the same setup.
