Bug Description

Every time I try to delete a file with Shift+Del, or replace a file by copying xxxx.yyy into a folder already containing a file with that name, Nautilus Elementary crashes. First it shows me the normal "are you sure?" alert, but no matter which button I click it always crashes. The Nautilus window and the "are you sure" alert does not go away, they just become unresponsive forever (at least as long as I've had the patience to wait). The only way to fix it is to open system monitor and kill Nautilus. Normal delete works fine.

I can't guarantee that this is NE's fault, but I was asked to report it here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1606897

I'd like to add that I'm having the exact same issue with this. Killing the nautilus process is the only way to continue when such a freeze occurs. I've shut off the prompt when emptying the trash, so that helps. Replacing files in an existing directory still causes an issue.

From what I can tell, if I am only replacing one file, the file will be replaced despite the freeze. If I'm replacing multiple files, it seems like the first file in the target directory is replaced but others are unaffected, despite the freeze.

Technical Details:
Ubuntu 10.10 32bit
Kernel 2.6.35-23-generic
GNOME 2.32.0
Memory: 2GB
File System: ext4

Good to hear that I'm not the only one, Peter Garlinki!

ammonkey: I can reproduce it every time. I've also found out that it doesn't just happen in the cases I mentioned first, but also when trying to delete .Trash folders (without using Shift+Del). It seems like it happens every time I try to delete something permanentely.

This happens not only with "shift+del" but all the times a nautilus dialog appears

I need to correct my self.
The problem does not appears on all nautilus dialog, in example the About is working fine.
But the dialog "Empty all of the items from the trash?" will push nautilus hanging

from strace I see the process ciclying on these functions:

I have realized the problem comes with the "nautilus-columns" (ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8) installation.
Removing it, Shift+Del on nautilus works fine.

I don't have nautilus-columns installed, so I guess we don't have the exact same bug.

Previously I said:

"It seems like it happens every time I try to delete something permanentely."

But I have now found that I was wrong. It seems rather that it happens every time I try to do anything with a file that prompts Nautilus to ask me a question. Because I have recently tried to open a file where I'm asked if I want to run it, run it in terminal, etc.. And every time that happens Nautilus freezes in the same fashion as when I try to delete something.

Is there anything else I could do in Nautilus to get a different kind of prompt, to check if that's actually the cause of the freezes?

So I guess the name of this bug should be changed.

(PS: Sorry about my bad English. I hope you still understand what I'm trying to say)

Same problem here. Every time when I get a conformation prompt Nautilus Elementary freezes and I have to kill the the program. I noticed the same thing happens when I press the search icon in the navigation bar.

reemoo: I hadn't tried the search button before, but trying it now it does the same for me. Hangs, just like with confirmation prompts.

Fabio Marconi: Why did you set this as invalid? There are clearly at least a few of us that are hit by this extremely bad bug. We can't delete anything from our hard drives! Should it be reported somewhere else?

Fabio Marconi: Oh, I'm really sorry. I didn't notice that it's not marked as invalid in NE, just in Ubuntu. Does that mean that it's been confirmed that this is not the fault of Ubuntu or Nautilus, but of Nautilus Elementary?

In my case the problem was vineyard: on every shift + del or replacement of file nautilus called a script of vineyard, which produced an error and nautilus hanged. I uninstalled vineyard and the problem is resolved.

This just started happening to me today - Update Manager installed a bunch of updates this morning (07-Jan-2011) and since then I've been getting weird hangs in Nautilus whenever it displays any kind of confirmation dialog. The dialog appears and I click one of the buttons which causes Nautilus to hang. Note that the process (delete, move etc.) still completes even though Nautilus hangs.

For me the problem was solved by removing the package rabbitvcs-nautilus
I think it’s the bug mentioned here http://blog.rabbitvcs.org/archives/280

Confirmed what Christoph said: Rabbit VCS was the culprit. They have an update on the PPA now which fixes the bug (you need to restart Nautilus/PC).

Sounds a complex bug.

For every bug registrant i am going to ask u to remove every extensions u could run and check again if the problem really come from nautilus or if it's external. Another interesting thing would be to know if you are running a full gnome environment (a gnome-session). It's kinda weird the hangs happens on the trash or zeitgeist search (which is now removed) which trigger some dbus actions.
