Bug Description
I experienced this myself in Xubuntu, but from what I have seen, it holds true for Ubuntu as well:
When applying a label to an icon (on the desktop or in Thunar), one has to right-click the icon, select the second tab of the context menu and choose the label.
Would it be possible to have the label selection on the first tab of the context menu (somewhere below the copy/cut/paste buttons)? This would save one click per icon to label.
Furthermore, it would be nice if labels could be applied to several icons at once. Unlike the copy/cut buttons, the label checkboxes in the second tab of the context menu seem to apply to single icons only, even if more are selected before the right-click.

You can apply labels to more than one file at a time (in gnome, at least). If you select multiple files, right click, then choose properties.
But, yeah, I agree: assigning labels is way too cumbersome.
