The "show-hidden-file" key is deprecated and ignored. The "show-hidden" key from "org.gtk.Settings.FileChooser" is now used instead.

So there is still a problem!
Unchecking the option in nautilus is not remembered! :/

But thanks for the tip!

A solution has been posted in ubuntuforums.org:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2133298&p=12623240#post12623240

open terminal and type:
dconf-editor
Enter and then:
org->gtk->settings->file-chooser
uncheck show-hidden

Solution in #4 worked.

I got this bug after upgrading to 13.04. All other settings it seemed to remember (sort by, reversed order).

The workaround works, but still this re-apperas randomly.

The workaround also works for me, but the "show hidden files" setting in nautilus still does not persist... I can only change it by changing the key manually :(

@9: You mean, it does not "stick" when enabled? Isn't this intended behaviour actually? At least I'm pretty sure it was like this already in 13.04 (whatever the Nautilus version was).

when i used the methode mentioned in #4 nothing gets displayed in deconf-editor and in terminal it displays

#11: Those errors are actually "normal" (at least I get them too), but dconf-editor should still open.

Anyway, that's another problem and unrelated to this bug and this is not a general help forum...

Another way to fix it: open gedit, type something and click on save. When the file chooser window opens, press ctrl+h to show/hide hidden folders. This changes the settings.

The bug reappeared a few weeks ago. When opening nautilus I see all the hidden folders. If I press Ctrl+h or unselect View->Show Hidden Files, the hidden files disappear. However, after closing and reopening nautilus, the hidden files are shown again, so my choice does not persist.

Workaround in comment #4 works.

I'm using stock Ubuntu 14.10, all updates installed.

Yes, the bug has reappeared with nautilus 3.14.2 in deed! :-(((

Neither Ctrl+H nor deselecting "Show Hidden Files" from the View menu nor using dConf editor and going to Nautilus Preferences nor right clicking and deselecting "Show Hidden Files" in a Save dialog box!!!

Only this worked: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-gnome/+bug/1171852/comments/14

I just filed a bug in file-roller, which seems to be the cause for this:
