Bug Description

By clicking those menu items from the places menu at the top panel, it won't open the folders

More information is needed to pinpoint the issue you're having... this obviously isn't happening to everyone. Daniel, do you have anything odd set up with your system, and could you give us some output of Gnome Panel when the bugs occur.

Sometimes typing "Nautilus" in the terminal normally fixes this.

After doing so, the Places menu works. I have the same issue and thats my work around.

Sounds like a nautilus elementary bug. This will also not be fixed for Jupiter as we are dropping gnome-panel for the next release, and gnome-panel was not created or maintained by the elementary team.
