we reserved the space bar to gloobus, a previewer.

Return and numeric keyboard Enter open files/folders too.

So no opportunity to use space bar for opening files in nautilus-elementary?
I know that Enter can be used too, but it doesn't fits my way of file browsing. I'm using left hand for tabs switching, pressing Ctrl, Alt and Shift modifiers and opening elements with space bar, and right hand on mouse for actually selecting elements.
So now if i've got to use enter for open operation, i've got to put right hand off the mouse each time i need to press Enter, which becomes annoying after 5 minutes of browsing.

i add this bug to our already long wishlist. idealy we have to check the return of the gloobus command if fail then open file with default app. idem est if u don't have gloobus installed it will launch the default app to open the current file.
