Bug Description

Mythtv sometimes seems to create empty recordings - info in database is there but no file.

Attached a backend-log with file and DVB options enabled . Recording "WOLKENLOS" didn´t work out - all logging info is there.

I use Mythtv on a DVB-C Network from Liwest austria with conax base encryption (Smartcard works fine). Sometimes though (every 3-5 recordings) the recording just is not there. I can´t interpret the log but it looks that mythtv can´t find its own file and some other strange entries.

got such empty/not existent recordings too, but not that often (appx 3 in 100).
using dvb-s/t and only FTA so this doesnt seem to be dvb-c and/or encryption related.

I have added an upstream bug watch for http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/3872

It's not exactly the same bug, but it is related as it's about a workaround for this issue.

I wanted to note that this issue seems to have a related one: often, after this bug occurs, the recording hardware will stop working, and will continue to generate empty recordings until the machine is rebooted. This happens to me, and is often mentioned in forums. An obvious hack is to schedule a reboot every night, to ensure that one misses at most a day's worth of shows, but that's not very elegant.

The dev commenting on a similar bug (http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/5507) called it a hardware issue, but it's not card-specific -- it is reported across a wide variety of hardware. Could this be a v4l issue or something?

Upstream has indicated they won't fix the issue.

'Calling it 'won't fix' instead since the problem remains, but as much as it pains me, no-one is interested enough in working on a fix.'

If someone else affected would like to develop a patch to fix it, you are still more than welcome to, and we can work with upstream to accept it.

I'd like to note that I experienced zero-byte recordings at least once or twice a week using myth 0.23 and 0.24 on Linux 2.6.32 (Debian Squeeze). But since I upgraded to 0.24.1 and vanilla Linux 2.6.39, I've haven't seen any empty ones for two weeks now.

The occasional "Error opening jump program file" in Live TV still happens now and then, I assumed they were somehow related (no data from the card => empty file).

Am I overly optimistic or is there a chance that this bug is fixed or somehow not triggered anymore?

What I found was that my usb tuner was overheating, and disabling the mythtv option where it keeps the tuner open all the time fixed the problem. YMMV.
