Bug Description

I just installed a fresh copy of Mythbuntu 10.10 on my Zotac Zbox as a frontend only machine. Any attempt to run a recorded video from my 10.4 backend (updated to 23.1) causes X to crash and GDM to present me with a fresh login. This system appears to work fine with 10.4. Any suggestions for further diagnosis would be appreciated.

Can you please turn on apport via /etc/default/apport and restart your
machine? That should allow you to file a crash report on the next
occurrence.

Mario,
Thanks for your quick reply. I turned on apport as you requested.
There was no initial report, but after logging out and back in a second
time, mythfrontend froze for ~30 seconds then an apport dialog appeared.
I have posted this bug as a follow-up to 658524.

As a side note, I also noticed that $TERM was not set when I opened a
terminal to edit /etc/default/apport. I don't know if this is related or
not.

Best regards,

Dave.

I will do that. In the

David,

There is an open bug about $TERM in Ubuntu already. It's got an SRU in progress, so expect a web update from maverick-updates in 1-2 weeks with a solution. Or you can enable maverick-proposed and get it now if you want.

What's the new bug number for your crash? I didn't see any others come through. I'll mark this as a duplicate of it once we see it and track a solution there.

Thanks,
The crash I posted is 658589; although I think it may be important
to note that the original exit (crash?) from X did not trigger apport,
only the second.

Best regards,

Dave.

I removed the nVidia driver fir the open source one and mythfrontend works fine apart from being abysmally slow. Are there previous versions of the nVidia driver in repositories, if so, how do I install these cleanly?

Use the hardware drivers tool (in the administration menu). It will
only offer the drivers (current and legacy) that work.

There appears only one version offered by the hardware drivers tool. I re-enabled it and once more I got a silent X exit back to gdm if I attempt to play any video with mythfrontend.

You may want to try to change your playback profile to slim or normal. I have seen another user who had the same issues when using the CPU+ profile.

Actually on this box you will want VDPAU normal.

Thanks for your suggestion - unfortunately I don't understand what
"VDPAU normal" means. Can you help?

Dave, I believe the suggestion is for you to go into your the setup on
your frontend and change the playback profile. There should be a
number of options, one of which is hopefully VDPAU normal (where VDPAU
refers to the name of the Linux driver for recent Nvidia-based video
hardware).

Marc,

Thanks for the clarification. This now seems to work fine.
