Bug Description

The program was working wonderfully until a few days ago (update to 0.7.10-0extras15.10.1) on Ubuntu 15.10 Wily Werewolf, and now my-weather-indicator will not fetch data from any weather source. Every time I click "Update Weather," regardless of provider or location, it says "Not available Not internet connection." The program information is displayed in the indicator menu (see attached screenshot).

The terminal simply displays the following error, with nothing further to suggest a problem:

****** Requesting timezone identificacion
******* Adquiring woeids *******
timed out
***** refreshing weather *****
timed out
***** refreshing weather *****
timed out

This is also occurring on another family member's Ubuntu 15.04 system (which I haven't yet upgraded).

Same here. I upgraded to 16.04 amd64 and still same problem. In other machine, it works with the upgrade of a few weeks ago, I think it is 0.7.10-0extras15.10.0 but with the latest one in this computer it stopped working (version 0.7.10-0extras15.10.1)

Same problem for me running 14.04. After a recent update to my-weather-indicator, I get the "Not Internet Connection" msg. Same display as in Comment #1 above.

Still having the same problem with "no internet connection" message, even if I change town or weather provider. Running Ubuntu 16.04 64 bit with my-weather-indicator 0.7.11extras 15.10.2.

Still problem after latest update, Running Ubuntu 16.04 64 bit with my-weather-indicator 0.7.11extras 15.10.2. Message of "no internet connection" does no longer appear as notification but still no temperature, just a "?" mark appears over the icon.

Strangely enough I am having this problem on my home network, but not at work. I get weather updates without problems at work but as soon as I'm on my home networks I get a question mark and no updates.

Hi,

the problem is in the file "/opt/extras.ubuntu.com/my-weather-indicator/share/my-weather-indicator/comun.py", function "internet_on".
This function is some sanity check, that the computer has a working Internet connectivity. It tries to get a proper reply from Google Public DNS server (8.8.8.8, TCP port 53), which might be blocked by your ISP (in my case the university network).

I just tried to bypass it (simply inserted "return True" at the beginning of this function and it works well.
So the solution is to make a better connectivity test (e. g. to the selected weather data provider) or to abandon such test completely.
Cheers, Filip
