Selection lost when selecting "back" from add to playlist dialog.

Bug Description

On Nexus 4, r18, RTM

Due to ambiguous behaviour when adding songs to a new playlist, users often loose the selected songs. If you select a number of songs, then select add to playlist, then create a new playlist, the songs do not get added to the playlist unless you then select the playlist... this is not obvious.

It happened to me the first time, and I've seen it happen to other people, that they select a number of songs, select add to playlist... create their first playlist... which has 0 songs in it (they think it should be "add to new playlist"), then they click back to check what they selected and the back button clears the selection.

Also, if you mis-clicked and got add to playlist, instead of queue songs... click back to try again, the selection is cleared.

It seems to me that if you create a playlist with songs selected, it should add those songs to the created playlist, /then/ clear the selection.... and also that the back button should not clear the selection.

Hi James! Thanks for filing this bug and helping to make Ubuntu and the music app better! We think your first proposal, to automatically select the created playlist under the "Select playlist" view is a great idea. We can see how it'd clarify or align to a user's perspective.

However, keeping the previous selection, ie not clearing the previous selection when you move to a different view, might need some more thought. Currently the app explicitly clears the multi-select state or any search state when the user leaves the current screen. Your request is reasonable, but selecting an action and hitting the back action doesn't seem like that frequent of a series of events. We assume that the user will follow through with the action they have selected, and if not, the state of the app should be "as normal" without multiselected items being shown. If you feel strongly otherwise, please indicate as such and we'll bring it up with the design team.

Victor, let me clarify what my user experience was the first time I used this, and ironically when I handed the phone to someone else they did the same thing, otherwise I would have written it off and not logged the bug.

I selected a bunch of tracks, which I was going to queue, but then at the last minute I thought, "I've spent ages selecting these, perhaps I should make a playlist"... I clicked add to playlist, and it said "you don't have any playlists".. this kinda put me off to start with, and it made me think that it might only work if I had a playlist in advance... so I thought, never mind, I'll queue them, clicked back, expecting to see my selection.. but it was gone...

I agree that the selection should be cleared when you do something with it, but if I go into the add to playlist dialog, and don't add the selection to a playlist, it probably should not be cleared.

As you say, I also think that if you add a playlist with songs selected, it should create the playlist with those songs in it... since I can't think of any reason anyone would select tracks and then create a playlist, and not doing so is confusing.

Finally, I would also suggest... that if you select add to playlist, with tracks selected when you don't have any playlists... it might be worth going directly to the create playlist dialog.
