Bug Description

The read builtin read(2)s octet for octet. This is often suboptimal, speed-wise.

Implement a switch for buffered read.

Maybe also automated buffered read for cases like -N/-n given.

Using 「read -raN-1 s <<<"$v"; unset s[${#s[*]}-1]」 to convert a string into a character array isn’t *that* cheap, considering what “<<<” does…
