Bug Description

The default microphone volume is overdriven on Ubuntu.
After restart the volume control jumps back to maximum.
Tested with current lp:mixxx.

The volume is not over-driven with Mixxx 1.10.0-beta1 x64 on Ubuntu Maverick. It happens on Ubuntu Oneiric 32bit and Lucid 32bit. The volume is not persistent on x64 here as well.

The Input settings for microphone are also not saved.

Hey Daniel,

Yup, the volume settings are not saved for any Mixxx control. No amplification is applied to the microphone within Mixxx so I'm inclined to think that the ALSA "Mic Boost" feature is enabled. Could you check if that's the case?

The ALSA Mic Boost is not enabled. The uv-Meter in the pulse preferences shows normal behaviour. In other application like skype the mic works fine. Only Mixxx shows this boost.

Does it sounds simlar to the audio in Bug #900364 ? We may be looking at
the same bug. Is it isolated to ALSA or does it happen in JACK or OSS as
well?

If I switch to OSS, the problem is gone.

Hi Daniel,

Do you have your vinyl control gain set to something other than 1? It turns out that vinyl control gain is applied to the microphone input a well as VC. I know that that doesn't explain why this happens on ALSA but not OSS but it's worth asking.

Hi RJ,
the venyl control gain is still on 1. I can confirm, that the mic volume depends on the Venyl control gain.

Are you sure the problem is not feedback? If you make the room silent (wear headphones) then speak is the volume too loud?

I think in 1.10 the mic has pretty significant feedback issues if the microphone is not very directional or otherwise protected from the master out.

I Think it is no feedback problem, because it happens although the master volume is 0 and it happens if I plug an external player into the mic jack.

I can confirm that I can easy produce a feedback loop. I have also noticed that the clipping area, (The red part of the mic uv-meter) is never lit.

I can confirm the issue with MacOSX 10.6.8.
All settings on default, sound API CoreAudio. The microphone has alwas some kind off loopback / overdiven volume. If i raise the latency i can hear how the loopback build up until it is one nasty feedback loop.

I need to hit "Query device" and lower the Mic volume to near zero for being able to use microphone.
