add a speaker icon to the Apply and OK buttons in preferences if they will trigger audio devices to close/open

Along the same lines, note that adjusting EQ shelves applies instantly and sounds horrible. We probably shouldn't apply those settings until Apply is clicked.

Yea, this is inconsistent almost everywhere in the preferences. Some settings update instantly. Some update on apply.

There is a benefit to hearing the difference right away if you aren't playing live -- you can search for the sound you want. But when live, you don't want that.

Long term, I was thinking about a checkbox to the left of the buttons "Live Testing" or something that makes the setting take effect immediately (but cancel would still undo it).

For example, when I edit the MIDI input table I want those changes to immediately take effect for testing but if I decide all my changes are junk I want to be able to hit cancel to undo everything.
