We have a Butterworth8 EQ now in master. I'm marking this as fixed.

We don't have a Butterworth8 EQ effect in master anymore so re-opening :). madjester was asking for it on IRC

Technical we can do it, but the IMHO the Likwitz Riley 8 is a much better replacement for this, because it has a flat responds at unity and a linear phase shift, which is not true for a pure Butterworth 8. This comes with the cost of rounder edges at the crossover frequencies which I am not able to hear.
Instead in my tests I here that the Likwitz Riley sound much more natural, with less ringing.
@madjester what is your use case for a pure butterworth?

I would also prefer to keep the old butterworth EQ as well, since it's not too hard to migrate and then users can keep using it if they like it more.

Will you use it? Why?
For now, I do not see a single advantage for a pure Butterworth EQ.
If one user can explain one, it is no problem to reintroduce it.

We may also go one step ahead and remove the normal equalizer. An replace it by a special EffecktUnit dedicate to EQ only (plus filter effect), The normal user will hardly notice a difference.
The advanced user can replace the build in EQ with every fancy EQ he likes. Or if there is no EQ required, use the EQ controls for effects.
We have all nice effect signal routing features available for EQ for free.
And we can have slick support for controllers with a dedicated filer knob .
