Bug Description

plugging an external monitor into my laptop and booting up I get a mirrored display with the resolution of the larger external monitor rather than a dual screen setup. The display settings applet only sees a single display of the large size so I can't position them side by side.

See also related bug 1195870 about removing a monitor after boot not being handled. I'm assuming that will be fixed at the same time general multi-monitor support is added.
