preferences dialogue slow to appear

On my system the Prefs dialogue is slow to start up. It always comes up with a noticeable lag, usually about 2sec. Is this something that could be addressed?

Using Xubuntu Linux with Xfce 4.6 and

Last time I tried to profile this I think I was seeing a lot of disk hits for things like .desktop files in the application selector widgets. I'll need to look further before I can say for sure, but it's something that can be checked relatively quickly if it is the bottleneck.

I moved populating of applications into an idle. I don't feel comfortable saying this does or doesn't "fix" this bug but it should help.
