Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, this package is not from the official Ubuntu repositories, and as such is not supported here.

Hi,

Did you install googleearth thanks to a package, or with the .bin script?
If this is from the package, could you provide the output of:
dpkg -l googleearth | grep ii

Thanks

I have the same issue on amd64 with googleearth version 4.0.2735.0-0medibuntu1 from the medibuntu repository. An strace of the process returns this 'ioctl(7, 0xc00c645c, 0xffc6e238) = -1 EINVAL (Invalid argument)' a lot.

yeah, i think it's due to ATI card.
There is a lot of issue between googleearth and ATI :/

it seems to be a googleearth dev issue, so we can't do something ...

Sorry

The same thing happens on my laptop with an Intel 945GM/GMS/940GML and using the i810 video driver.

AT every Ubuntu release it is the same problem because of ati proprietary drivers. :(

There was the same issue for dapper->edgy, maybe you'll find something useful: Bug #62078

I have a macbook with an Intel 945GM/GMS/940GML too, and I don't have such an issue (runs fine, no freeze)... :/

Oops! Sorry, I didn't read enough carefully (I have a 1st rev, so i386 only). :/

Maybe another missing 32bits library or dependency on ia32-libs-*...

Hi guys: I'm the one who posted the original bug. I've found a fix that works for two of my boxen that have ati cards.

Download the file, place it in the google earth folder and rename it as per the instructions.

Good luck.

Oh yeah, one more thing...

Place this file ONLY in the google earth folder. Overwriting any
existing copies anywhere else may break other apps that use openGL.

Hi all... Me again. I've been playing around with different versions of the library. This one seems to give better results than the previous one; it's smoother and faster.
Kubuntu fiesty 7.04 devel
ati mobile radeon
compaq evo N1015v
AMD Athlon 1600+

Thanks

I don't see what I can do without breaking googleearth for nvidia cards. :/
For the moment, I think I'll add a README.Debian which explains the situation for fglrx drivers, with the links given above.

I'm also using the fglrx driver, though I'm using the xorg-driver-fglrx package, currently at 7.1.0-8.34.8+20.4-14.15.

Using the last supplied libGL.so.1 file I had gotten googlearth to work yesterday, but with a warning that I was running in Software GL mode, even though it was hardware accelerated. After updating this morning to the latest packages which included googleearth and the xorg-driver-fglrx packages, I can no longer get googleearth to get past the splash screen, with or without the libGL.so.1 file in /usr/lib/googleearth.

I've verified that I do have hardware acceleration via glxinfo and glxgears, fgl_glxgears, etc.

Any suggestions?

package versions:

googleearth 4.0.2735.0-0medibuntu4
ia32-libs 1.5ubuntu9
ia32-libs-gtk 25
ia32-libs-kde 12
ia32-libs-sdl 1.0ubuntu3

running kernel 2.6.20-13-generic

Let me know if you need any other info.

Download full text (4.0 KiB)

looks like the issue has returned with fglrx 8.40.4...I am using an ATI Xpress 200M. I followed instructions to download the file and it seems to have made the issue worse. I managed to get the warning flags about using it in software GL mode...when it finally came up it had no map of the earth. When I closed and reopened got absolutely nothing except brief splash screen.

Here is error output from terminal:
