error converting aiff to aac

Bug Description
same error as 504867 but different starting file format (aiff) - these are also 24/96 files, so they may have the same root.

interestingly (well, it's maybe not that interesting) when I tried to convert the aiff files to aac within itunes I got an error - no useful message but it suggests that the problem is core audio related rather than max - no similar error converting to mp3 within itunes, or in Max.
