Bug Description

Hardware: MacPro Dual-Core Intel Xeon
OS: 10.5.8 (Leopard)
App Version: Max v. 0.9.1

While attempting to convert 24-bit/96kHz FLAC files to MPEG-4 (AAC) format 320 vbr, the following error message is produced by the File Conversion dialogue box:

An error occurred while encoding the file [filename]. The call to ExtAudioFileSetProperty failed.

NOTE: This appears to be a possible duplicate of Bug #378275 (The call to ExtAudioFileSetProperty failed), which is still open/undecided.

Not sure if it's the 24-bit thing that makes the MP4 encoder fail.

I tried resampling the following:
converting a 24-bit 96kHz FLAC to MP4 == FAIL
converting a 16-bit 96kHz FLAC to MP4 == FAIL
converting a 16-bit 44kHz FLAC to MP4 == SUCCESS

So the problem might be that the MP4 encoder can't handle 96kHz frequency - at the very least - AND 24-bit.

I also had the same experience with xACT. If xACT uses the same MP4 codec, it should probably mean that this is a limitation of the codec, not Max.

I think this is an issue with the AAC encoder shipped with OS X, not with Max itself.
