max will not convert files

When I try to convert tracks from one format to another (I've tried to do m4a to mp3 or to aiff, wav to mp3, aiff to mp3...), I get an error. The hex code at the end may have varied some, but the format is similar: "*** -[NSCFDictionary lastPathComponent]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x1594fe10"

The file(s) I'm trying to convert remain in the queue, and I'm giving the option of resuming or stopping...but either way, it doesn't work any more.

(I'm running Leopard and am using the latest stable version of Max)

I am going to try to install a new instance of Max.

There was a similar bug reported in the forums about a year ago, to whcih (as far as I can tell) there's been no response.
