24 bit m4a file plays sporadically

Bug Description

When I take a 24bit FLAC file and convert it to a m4a apple lossless file, the file doesn't play correctly. Less than a second of song plays, then static, the song, then static. The file size increases to around twice of the original FLAC.

What are you using to play the file? What is its sample rate?

Hello Stephen,

I am using itunes or the media player in finder to play the file.
When the file is imported to itunes, the sample rate is set at
'automatic' as this is the only option available .

Please see attached screen shot of Max screen I get when I'm
selecting the output settings. As you can see quality, bitrate and
VBR are unable to be selected.

It's strange that the file size is almost twice that of the original
FLAC file. Shouldn't it be the same size? It's like extra data is
being added into the file. I'm using Max 0.8.1.

Please try using the latest development build (currently r1381) from http://files.sbooth.org and let me know if the issue is resolved.

Stephen,

I tried the latest build and the same issue occurs. A 24-bit FLAC
file that was 55.8mb ended up as a 89.3 m4a file. The converted file
plays a fraction of a second of music, then static, then music etc.

When I use XLD to convert the files it works fine, so the issue
appears to be Max. My FLAC files come from the B&W music club
website. Any more ideas?

I've committed several 24-bit fixes to Max recently and I couldn't remember if r1381 included them. Are you able to build from source for testing?

Stephen,

As I don't know what you mean when you ask me whether I can build
from source, then I guess I don't know how to do it. Is there someway
I could send you the original file? It's over 50mb, so couldn't be
emailed. I don't currently have a ftp site or website I could use.

Same issue here, with the lastest Max (0.8.1), which apparently includes some 24bits fixes according to trac.
Here are interesting numbers:
foo.wav 124416044 bytes
foo.flac 73911753 bytes
foo.m4a 163047425 bytes
So the Apple Lossless version is actually bigger than the .wav ! (and is mostly static).

Yes, it's mostly static. I've also used XLd to process the file and
this worked ok. Still keen to use Max though. I haven't yet received
a fix from the developer.
