The only packages in Ubuntu that use their directory are mate-backgrounds, mate-screensave
Quite a few packages use /usr/share/

Install ubuntu-wallpapers.
Right-click on the MATE desktop and select Change Desktop Background
The Ubuntu default wallpapers should show in the list.
