Column width can't be adjusted in "View as column" mode even though cursor changes to indicate that the feature was meant to be there

When a mouse is hovering over the edge between two columns in "View as column" mode, cursor changes its appearance as if there is a feature that allows to change width of those columns - two sided arrow that is -- but when I try to grab that edge and move it with the mouse, nothing happens.

The default width is not enough to contain even moderate length of names of files and folders.
