[api] APIs do not perform strict key checking in the request body

Bug Description

Request schemas should be validated by the API and instead of silently failing API requests that come in with unrecognized fields, the API should turn down the request with HTTPBadRequest

I removed the assignee - this issue exists, and we thought of adding JSONSchema validation to the API. There is a specification for this [1], however, the owner/s seem to have stepped away. Contributions would be welcome!
