does not play new mail sound in xubuntu

Bug Description
Mail Notification can't play the new mail notification sound, or any other sound on new mail arrival.
When selecting the sound, and the "Play" button is hit, no sound is heard.
My system is Xubuntu 11.10. It might be some missing sound library problem, although sound works good otherwise, and other applications (Thunderbird, for example) can play new mail arrival sounds.
