Bug Description

Recently I upgraded from Ubuntu 8.10 to Ubuntu 9.04.
Then Mail notification stopped working. It's still in the Apps menu but don't start when I click on the icon. Neither does it show any new mail.
I had it running very nice under Ubuntu 8.10.
I tried to reinstall in Synaptic, still the same problem!

Version installed: 5.4.dfsg.1-1Ubuntu1

Now that Ubuntu 9.04 has been released, I am able to see new mail notifications. But they do not appear in Ubuntu's new notification system. Instead each notification appears as a dialog window.

It seems that Ubuntu's new notification system does not support action buttons in notifications. When a notification does contain action buttons, the new system falls back to displaying a dialog window. Here is an explanation of this behavior in another project:

This is unacceptable. I posted a comment in that blog that sums up my thoughts and experience;

Do you have any idea how insanely annoying it is to get a dialog box I have to click each time I get a new email with mail-notification now? It worked so well earlier when it’d just do a quick popup anchored by the toolbar icon.

Do you know how many mails average users get in a day? Much less sysadmins? You really think users want to click an okay button hundreds of times, with hundreds of popup windows strewn all about the desktop?

My mail system is now unusable in Ubuntu - thanks. My choice is either not be notified of new mail via a desktop alert, or get spammed by hundreds of pop windows.

Epic fail.

@Rob, you could very easily disable popup windows in mail-notification options.

Same problem.
@Miloš, yes, but that is a temporal solution. It should be solved.

hi mischa, do you still have this bug with a recent version of ubuntu? (9.04 reached its end of life a month ago) I cannot reproduce here on maverick. perhaps you try to reinstall with aptitude purge mail-notification; aptitude install mail-notification ?

Changed in mail-notification:
