Bug Description
There is no icon on the tray - I think there should be (I haven't used it
before). When I run 'mail-notification -p' or '-o' it crashes after a few
seconds (not a constant time). Until then the GUI is totally responsive.
Almost always there's this warning (the hex number differs):
Xlib: unexpected async reply (sequence 0x48d)!
And sometimes also this:
Xlib: sequence lost (0x10209 > 0x217) in reply type 0xa1!
There is no SEGFAULT. Just those warnings in the terminal.
I'm using gentoo amd64. I'm not sure what info to attach so please ask if something more would help.

I have the same problem.
I think you also have a gmail account, because I noticed that the gmail plug-in is cause of this crashes.
The temporary solution is to check mails from gmail via pop plug-in.
To do it you have to delete your old configuration (I did it by this: "find ~ -name mail-notification -exec rm -r {} \;" and deleting this passwd form seahorse, the second action is optional) and add your new account via pop.
I hope some developers repair this, because checking gmail via pop sucks.
Cheers
