At the moment I don't believe that we run the spam filters we already have on forum posts, that would be the first step.

Then yes, it would be a good idea to look at something like akismet, or a free alternative like blogspam.net

An update on this, we check forum posts for blacklisted URLs. But we don't apply the other anti-spam checks against forum posts. See https://bugs.launchpad.net/mahara/+bug/1250641 for more info about spam posts in the mahara.org forum specifically.

Several versions ago, we implemented the probation points as a measure to protect against spam. this doesn't allow a newly registered person to post active links.

Additionally, objectionable content can be reported and all forum posts can be moderated, which would help in a public forum on sites where anyone can register without admin approval.
