Bug Description

Please can we update the 16.04 LTS Ubuntu Server install menu (the one you get after selecting a language when installing the server). It should read:

------- START CENTRED TEXT ---------

 * Install single Ubuntu server
 * Install MAAS region controller
 * Install MAAS rack controller
 * Rescue a broken system
 * Check disk for defects
 * Boot from first disk
 * Test memory

MAAS is "Metal as a Service", a software-defined data centre solution.
It provides inventory, DHCP, DNS, PXE, and OS installation services,
supporting Ubuntu, CentOS, WIndows and custom OS images.

Not sure if debian-installer is the right place to file this bug, please do reassign to a different source package as needed. I will also file related bugs on MAAS to ensure that the region and rack controller install experiences are neat. Thanks!

I'm just gardening the bug targets here; actual implementation will probably be someone like Mathieu as I'm pretty full up with OLS work! But a couple of notes: translatable strings will need to get into gfxboot-theme-ubuntu sooner rather than later; and we'll need to know what the actual implementations of each of the new targets are, including the necessary kernel command lines.

affects: debian-installer (Ubuntu) → ubuntu-cdimage

We do need to get this sorted. It's likely too late for us to fit this in for release but we'll do a pass on it and see if we can close the delta in time.

What is the difference in starting MAAS for a region controller vs. a rack controller? Are there specific parameters to pass on the kernel command-line ?

Also, I recall starting a MAAS install from the CD wasn't working at all when I last tested (and I had to go fix it by re-adding wget or curl support).

Adding a task for debian-cd, since we write the menu entries there, the text display will happen somewhere between debian-cd and gfxboot-theme-ubuntu.

Marking as Incomplete since we're missing the details on how we can start these two new MAAS options.

I think both of these simply involve package installation. It might be a better experience if we ask the needed questions up front, but just doing so as a post-install package install is a fine start. The MAAS team should comment on the specific packages associated with each of the two options, and then we should figure out if there is installer-specific work that would improve the experience.

New version of MAAS packaging has been uploaded that fully supports the CD Installer options. As far as the CD options itself, I'll land those changes one the new MAAS package is made available in Xenial.
